The Basic Peace Officer Academy prepares individuals to perform the duties of police and public security officers, including patrol and investigative activities, traffic control, crowd control and public relations, witness interviewing, evidence collection and management, basic crime prevention methods, weapon and equipment operation and maintenance, report preparation and other routine law enforcement responsibilities.

Programs of Study

This program focuses on the criminal justice system, its organizational components and processes, as well as its legal and public policy contexts. This includes instruction in criminal law and policy, police and correction systems organization, the administration of justice and the judiciary, and public attitudes regarding criminal justice issues.

Why become a peace officer?

Entering a career in law enforcement means you're taking on a responsibility and duty to your community and all those within it. Being a peace officer is a rewarding and challenging career. Peace officers have the option to join the police force, become patrol or court officers, state troopers, join the border patrol and otherwise work in most areas that may involve enforcing the law, protecting life and property, and making lawful arrests.

What You'll Learn

  • Various aspects of police work including minimum competencies in police functions of most frequent occurrence and concepts of uniformity in police practices and procedures.
  • Basic techniques for evaluating and analyzing occupationally hazardous situations and selection of the appropriate response or procedure.
  • Laws of arrest, search and seizure, documentation of evidence and patrol procedures in a variety of scenarios and environments.
  • How to speak and read basic Spanish.
  • How to prepare extensive reports independently.
  • Advanced proficiency with firearms.
