Nader Gabriel, Director of College Business Services at Moreno Valley College, was recognized at the Association of Chief Business Officials (ACBO) Conference on Oct. 20 for completing the ACBO Institute II program, a statewide leadership development initiative for community college business officers across California.

The ACBO Institute II program offers an in-depth exploration of strategic planning, institutional governance, and fiscal leadership in higher education. Designed for professionals advancing into executive roles, the program fosters collaboration among participants to address shared challenges and identify effective strategies for improving student and institutional outcomes.

Gabriel said he was inspired to join the program to deepen his understanding of institutional governance and to connect with peers across the California Community Colleges system.

“The most valuable takeaway from the ACBO Institute II program was the significance of adaptive leadership,” he said. “Effective leaders must not only manage current challenges but also anticipate future trends to make informed decisions that positively impact our institution and the student experience.”

He noted that completing the program has strengthened his approach to inclusive and data-informed decision-making. “It has equipped me with practical tools and strategies that I can implement to foster a more innovative environment for collaborative governance,” Gabriel said.

At the ACBO Conference, Gabriel was recognized for completing the ACBO Institute II program. He had previously completed Institute I, which together reflects his continued commitment to professional growth and leadership in community college business services. He credited his supervisor, Majd Askar, vice president of Business Services, for her encouragement and support throughout the process.

Gabriel added that one of the most enriching aspects of the program was the exchange of diverse perspectives among participants and presenters. “The interactions broadened my understanding of the challenges and opportunities in community colleges statewide,” he said.

Leadership development programs like ACBO Institute II play a critical role in strengthening California’s community colleges by preparing employees to lead with foresight, collaboration, and accountability, which directly enhances institutional effectiveness and the student experience.
